First graders learned about the art of clay tile making. They used the additive technique to create a picture on a tile. They could choose the picture that they wanted to make. Some of them used their "old reliable schemas" as the subject matter (hearts, smiley faces, etc). Some took a more original approach. Either way, they were all excited about the process and proud of their products. We painted them with tempera paint (glaze gets so expensive!!) and then I sprayed them with an enamel for shine.

Nam June Paik Robots
1st graders inquired about the recycled robot sculptures of Korean artist Nam June Paik. We talked about the roles of robots for humans. They were given National Geographic magazines to collage their own robot! They love the Nat Geo mags too!
O'Keefe Flowers
Here are 1st grader's interpretations of O'Keefe's flowers. We learned about up close and far away by putting our hands close to our face and them moving them away and speaking about near and far, big and small. The first graders were given their own flower (fake ones!) and asked to draw it close up. It was tricky for them to break away from their schemas but I think they did pretty well!

Klimt Trees
Here is another project from our "Artists from different times and places" unit. They examined Gustave Klimt's imaginative trees and created their own in the style of Klimt.
Cityscapes
1st graders are currently larning about different artists from different times and places. Here, we examined Paul Klee's cityscape, specifically looking at how it is constructed of many geometric shapes.
1st graders then collaged their own cityscapes.
